Paying for Membership Using PayPalOverseas members often report that paying for UK goods and services can be a problem, due to currency conversion costs and high charges that the banks impose on “foreign” payments. One solution is to pay by Debit or Credit Card but often small organisations cannot accept such payments. A common solution is to pay on-line via the Internet but, for security reasons, many people are not willing to give their card details to websites. PayPal was initially created to help individuals pay for items that they purchased from the on-line auction site eBay but is now widely used for other payments. It now supports over 150 million accounts and provides a very secure method for any PayPal account holder to pay another. To set up a PayPal account you simply need to sign up at www.paypal.co.uk and provide PayPal with the details of your preferred method of payment, your email address and a password. PayPal then handles payments on your behalf without passing on your details to others that you wish to pay. You just login to PayPal, identify the person or organisation that you would like to pay by their email address and PayPal will do the rest. To pay your membership fee to the Old Alpertonians you will need to specify paypal@oldalpertonians.org.uk as our PayPal email address and PayPal will notify us each time a payment arrives. You can pay using your preferred currency but will need to ensure that the OA receive payments in Pounds Sterling. PayPal imposes a small percentage charge for making payments and currency conversion, so it is only reasonable that the OA ask members using this payment method to cover this small addition. You should add 50p for funds sent from the UK, 60p for Europe and 70p for all other overseas users. This is little more than the cost of posting a cheque and avoids hassle.
